| Artist Vision Statement

| My commitment is to produce evocative images that reflect the culture and physical environment that surrounds me. My search includes symbolism, religion and philosophy. My colors become symbols for emotional states: fear, hate, joy, love, excitement, depending on what experiences and beliefs the viewer brings to the paintings. I show these emotions with color and composition which I hope are compelling to the viewer and allow different perceptions to develop slowly. My aesthetic concern is to show that life is more than daily consciousness. I use mystery and ritual in my paintings: they are conceived and produced as direct response to my environment. For this reason my work is time-and-location specific. | ||
| A Colorful Spirit World-
The Art of Marius Starkey By Matthew Seubert-Art Historian/Writer |
||
| The art of Marius Starkey transports the viewer to a magical realm of ethereal spirits and vibrant colors. The subject matter, especially the spirits, seems dreamlike and soothing. Spirits swirl around each other, seeming to vanish and reappear. Occasionally the subject matter includes abstract landscapes as well. The color palette varies widely, but is always pleasing. Marius uses both contrasting color combinations and hues within the same palette with great beauty. | ||

Artist By Maria Mejia-Photographer |

| There are painters who paint a lifetime not just for intellectual adventure but for the experience of something else. These artists by the very essence of this act, enter into another level by letting the images they create shape themselves. In turn this gives the image a voice to reveal what is inside that artist. If the painting that is composed can stand on its own and catch the mysteries something we the viewer are reminded that life is more that a moment on the canvas. Most of Marius' life has been spent in this act of painting. He has wrapped his energies and obsessions in the solemn act of painting. As his companion for over fifteen years, I have witnessed his skill through to its fulfillment in a way of painting that reaches to that place unseen inside all of us. I've watched him stand before a blank canvas as he methodically selects magnificent colors with the aid of his brush, that brush he uses like a sword and a weapon to cut into any world. As he begins to fill the canvas he uses his skill, his own sharp eye, his thoughts, and some version of his spirit, which has been inspired by a host of other artists. Often, when he has finished with a particular painting he is more surprised by the outcome than I am. It is painting that has carried him through life, arousing all the senses and most of all it has given him awareness of his own placement in space and time. | ||
